Upon arrival in Punakha, check in at your hotel and prepare for an afternoon of exploration. Visit the historic Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. This impressive fortress, known as Druk Pungthang Dechen Phodrang or the Palace of Great Happiness, once served as the seat of the government. It remains the winter residence of the Je-Khenpo (Chief Abbot of Bhutan) and was the site where King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck convened the first National Assembly in 1952. Later, take a short excursion to Chhimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility, built by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, the Divine Madman.
